Chuck D, born on 1 August 1960 in Roosevelt, New York, USA, associated with the genres East Coast Hip Hop / Conscious Hip Hop / Political Hip Hop, a member of several hip hop groups, including the prominent Public Enemy. Several of his songs referenced Vietnam: "The Pride" (1996) as a solo artist, and "Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos" (1988), "Welcome to the Terrordome" (1989), and "Resurrection" (1998) with Public Enemy.The song "The Pride" (Mercury Records # 314 532 944-2) focused on black pride and the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s - it referenced the James Brown song "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud (Parts 1 & 2)" (1968), the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.: "I was in third grade when Dr. King got slain".
