Sung in rough rural dialect from a Vietnamese child's perspective: village burned in the evening, parents killed before his eyes 'though we didn't do anything'; flees with his little sister along the Mekong, both starving; refuses to cry 'because I'm a man'; final verse (printed but not sung on the record, per sleeve) addresses his dead parents - 'if there'd been no war, the four of us could have lived together'.
