He was conscripted to the Vietnam War, but avoided service through studying. He originally composed the song "Vietnam Image" in 1970, which clocked in at 20 minutes. He submitted a tape recording of it as partial fulfilment for his degree of Master of Music at the University of Adelaide, in January 1971, which is stored at the National Library of Australia.
