In the linear notes of this album (Atlantic # SD 16060), Brubeck said that "this music is dedicated to the slain students of Kent University and Mississippi State, and all other innocent victims caught in the cross-fire between repression and rebellion". (1) (2) The album cover depicted dead, blood-stained people, painted by Elizabeth Eddy. The title of the album came from the Book of Isaiah: "truth is fallen in the street and equity cannot rise".
