Annotation — Kent / Jackson State Songs
Obscure, relatively unknown Hip Hop artist Christopher Steele, born in Denver, Colorado, USA. The song "Subterranean Homesick News" (Dirty Laboratory Records # DLP0011) referenced the Kent State shooting - this took place on 4 May 1970, in Ohio, where members of the Ohio State Guard shot and killed four students at an anti-Vietnam War demonstration. They used this as a metaphor / example of government neglect: "instead of Kent State they kill us with silence, they kill us with neglect". One of dozens of post-war songs about the demonstration, it displays the event's lingering importance as a reference point for confrontation with government / state bodies in contemporary society and protest music.
