About the artist
Thomas Lee 'Tommy' Tate, American southern soul singer and songwriter, born 29 September 1945 in Homestead, Florida, raised in Jackson, Mississippi; died 20 January 2017 in Jackson, Mississippi. A featured vocalist with Tim Whitsett's Imperial Show Band, he later scored three R&B chart hits on KoKo ('School of Life', 1972) and wrote for Luther Ingram, Bobby Bland, Johnnie Taylor and Isaac Hayes. Both master tracks form his 1970 Jackson Sound single (JS-1005), a deep-soul hymn honoring Phillip Gibbs and James Green, the two students killed in the 14 May 1970 Jackson State shootings; royalties…
