About the artist
Ramon Calzadilla (8 January 1934 - 13 April 2024) was a Cuban baritone, born in Havana, trained at the Conservatorio Hubert de Blanck and then in Rome (Accademia di Santa Cecilia) and Bucharest on government scholarship. He won the 1960 Beniamino Gigli International Singing Contest in Rome and first prize at the 1962 Toulouse International Singing Competition, was soloist baritone of Cuba's National Opera Company from 1960 to 1980, founded the singing department of Cuba's Instituto Superior de Arte in 1977, later taught in Mexico, and died in Cuernavaca in April 2024 at 90.
