The song "Don't Cry My Soldier Boy" (Capitol Records # 5882) focused on a soldier off to fight overseas and the narrator (girlfriend / wife) promised the soldier that she will be waiting for him on his return. Smooth soul singer Thelma Houston, born in Mississippi in 1946, relocated to California where she joined the group Art Reynolds Singers on Capitol Records. She then moved to the Motown sub-label MoWest. This song, released during the Vietnam escalation, was a cover of the 1962 single "Don't Cry My Soldier Boy" (King Records # 5597) by the girl-group The Shondells.
