Annotation — Civil Rights Songs
Spoken word recording of the famous Freedom of Speech Movement that took place at the University of California 1964-1965, dealing with current issues of the day, including Civil Rights and the Vietnam War. The anti-Vietnam War protest movement, which put pressure on the White House and the Congress, actual grew and picked up momentum on the college campuses, with connections to broader pressure groups such as the Free Speech Movement (over the rights of students to politically organise on campus), and the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), formed in the early 1960s. The latter ran the "March Against the War in Vietnam" demonstrations in Washington D.C. on 17 April 1965 and 27 November 1965, the latter attended by around 20,000-25,000 people and well known musicians, including Joan Baez and Phil Ochs. The record runs through the chronology of events with recordings of the speeches: "We have been driven to the first civil disobedience on campus...after our liberties where chopped...should the faculty be trailing us or leading us?"
