Annotation — 1968 Chicago Seven / Eight Songs

Michael Borkson, singer/songwriter from Boston, Massachusetts. The song "1968" is unreleased on a physical format, only available for streaming or download. This one set the historical context, noting the two major assassinations in US politics in 1968 - Martin Luther King Jr. (4 April 1968) and Robert F. Kennedy (6 June 1968). The narrator said that the "ghettos did set aflame", as did Buddhist monks in Vietnam. It noted that President Lyndon B. Johnson had stood down with "the war...raging...draft cards did burn", and then onto the Convention: "revolutionaries in Chicago's street", in defiance of Mayor Richard J. Daley and the Democratic nominee for president Hubert Humphrey. The narrator specifically referenced Abbie Hoffman and Bobby Seale of the Chicago Eight. It called on the listener not to forget the police brutality."1968 was a year I remember, revolution spilling to the streets / 1968, in the streets of Chicago, as the crooked politicians took their seats / And the revolution did ring, as the children did sing, about love, about peace / In 1968, the war it was raging, it made President Johnson resign / Nixon took over, he escalated the bombing, America no longer yours…
