The song "El soldado huerfanito (Homenaje al Sgt. Richard Campos)" ("The Orphan Soldier (Tribute to Sgt. Richard Campos)") (Norteño # No-266) is of course another tribute to the Mexican-American soldier Richard Campos, based a true story. (1) K.I.A. in Vietnam at the age of 26 in 1966. His body was shipped to the US, but nobody claimed it. It turned out that he was an orphan in California. Also see the records: El corrido de Ricardo Campos by Los Reyes de Albuquerque and Richard Campos by Daniel Valdez, the later of which appeared in appeared in the Vietnam War Songbook, published in 1969 by Barbara Dane and Irwin Silber, which contained 100 Vietnam War songs. The Los Conquistadores formed in 1939, based in San Antonio, where this record was released, featuring the members Benjamín Valdez (guitar, arranger), Enrique Q. Rodríguez (requinto guitar, vocals), José A. Morante (vocals, composer). The group was also known as Los Conquistadores de José Morante, and they released several Vietnam War songs, and other political tribute songs, such as to JFK, LBJ, and RFK.
