Grand Funk Railroad (GFR), an American hard rock band that formed in Flint, Michigan in 1968 by Mark Farner (guitar, vocals) and Don Brewer (drums, vocals) - both of who were born in Flint and members of the short lived Flint garage rock band Terry Knight & The Pack (1965-1967). (1) A former member of that band, Terry Knight (from Lapeer, Michigan), became the manager GFR. They released the song "People, Let's Stop the War" (Capitol Records # P-3217) which attacked the president for leading the country to war and called on people to protest against Vietnam. The lyrics particularly drew attention to war economics, arguing that "big men...get rich, there's money in them war machines". Featuring on the album E Pluribus Funk (Capitol Records # SW-853). Terry Knight claimed in Billboard on 25 December 1971 that the group's "cut 'People, Let's Stop the War' has been denied AM airplay because the word 'bitch' is included in the lyric...we are virtually devoid of airplay in major markets". (1) This single did not chart despite Billboard coverage.
