The country pop song "P.O.W. in Vietnam" (Swamp Country Records # 4611) by Loston McEvers is a post-war, 1980s view, in which the narrator presented a US soldier who still resided in a Vietnamese prison, two decades after the end of the war. As mentioned above, this fitted into a 1980s trend in Hollywood films to present American soldiers being held captive in Asian countries, waiting to be rescued by Vietnam veterans. For example, First Blood [Rambo] (1982), Uncommon Valor (1983), and Missing in Action (1984). (1) So in the lyrics, the soldier wrote to his mother, date stamped 1988: "I'm sorry I can't be with you at home, I'm a prisoner of war in Vietnam". He wanted to wish her happy birthday and merry "Christmas". He reported that his friend had just died. He asked his mother and father to pray for the US soldier's "still overseas". Unknown location. Produced and written by McEvers. There is a 2010 newspaper reference, in the Jena Times, Louisiana, to a country singer called McEvers, which may be the same person. (2)&
