About the artist
American honky-tonk country singer, born 12 April 1929, a native of Martins Mill, Texas; died 22 January 2013 in Athens, Texas, where he was long based, after suffering from lymphoma. A Louisiana Hayride star who famously turned down a Grand Ole Opry contract rather than leave Texas, he led Tony Douglas and the Shrimpers and reached the country Top 30 with 'His and Hers' (1962-63), followed by 'Thank You for Touching My Life', 'My Last Day' and 'If I Can Make It (Through the Mornin')'.
