Released after the war in 1974, the track "Leave Him Alone" (Volt Records # VOS 9503) by Stu Gardner recalled the draft and its impact on families. The narrator told the story of a 21 year old who "got a call to go fight a war" in order "to save us all". The soldier's mother cried when she heard that her son had been drafted, and she wondered "why did they choose him". Gardner had been a session keyboardist, working with Bill Cosby, among others. He currently lives in Richmond, Virginia, USA.

About the artist
Stuart Lavert Leonard Gardner is an American musician, composer and arranger who grew up in Richmond, Virginia and later moved to Redwood City, California. He recorded "Big Mouth" (Spindizzy, 1971) and "And The Sanctified Sound" (Volt VOS-9503, 1974) - which carries "Leave Him Alone" as track B3, the confirmed anchor - with Bill Cosby writing the liner notes. He went on to co-write "Kiss Me", the Cosby Show theme, and to serve as musical director for The Cosby Show and A Different World; the track was anthologised on Kent/Ace's "Stop The War (Vietnam Through The Eyes Of Black America…
