Terry Callier released the genre crossing album What Color is Love (Cadet Records # CA 50019) in 1972, a fusion of soul, jazz, blues, and folk. Produced by Charles Stepney of the Chess / Cadet labels, he developed a psychedelic orchestral soul sound, employed on this album. There is a spiritual undertone to this album, along with love ballads and many social / political references, such as poverty, ghettos, war, and junkies. Callier recorded the album at the RCA studios in Chicago, Illinois - the city of Callier's birth (1945-2012), and where he lived. He had a childhood association with Curtis Mayfield, wrote a song for The Dells, and toured with Gil Scott-Heron and George Benson in the 1970s. The lyrical theme of the song "Ho Tsing Mee (A Song in the Sun)" soon revealed itself with the observation of "children dying in their daddy's war", and that the Vietnam veterans, who returned to the US as heroes, said that "they never wanna fight no more". He argued against those who "still say" that the war was "all right", by highlighting a mother who had "lost her only son" in the war.
